Edibles are the category with the clearest rules and the most misunderstandings. Here is the whole thing in a few minutes.
The 10mg rule
In Canada, a single package of cannabis edibles can contain no more than 10mg of THC in total. Not per piece, per package. That applies to gummies, chocolate, baked goods and everything else in the category. It is why legal edibles come in small packs and why a bag of ten gummies is usually 1mg each.
It also means legal edibles are a poor way to buy in bulk and an excellent way to control a dose.
How long they take
Longer than you want them to. Most edibles take between 30 minutes and two hours to be felt, depending on what you have eaten and when. That gap is where the one mistake happens.
The mistake
Taking a second one because the first has not arrived. Both then arrive together, usually at the worst moment. Take one, put the package away, and do something else for two hours. If two hours pass and you want more, you now know your baseline.

- New to it: 2.5mg is a genuine dose, not a tourist option.
- Occasional: 5mg.
- Regular: 10mg, which is one full legal package.
Eating them on an empty stomach makes onset faster and sharper. With food it is slower and gentler.
The formats
- Gummies and soft chews. Easiest to split, longest shelf life.
- Chocolate. Better flavour, melts, and the squares are not always evenly dosed if it has been warm.
- Baked goods and confectionery. Shorter shelf life, more of an occasion.

Storing them safely
Keep edibles in their original child-resistant packaging, keep them away from actual snacks, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. A gummy in a kitchen drawer looks exactly like a gummy.
Nutrition and allergens
Legal edibles carry a full ingredient list and allergen declaration, same as any packaged food. Read it if you need to. If you are unsure about how cannabis interacts with a medication or a health condition, that is a question for a pharmacist or doctor rather than a shop.
