Pre-rolls are the most bought and least discussed thing on any cannabis shelf. They are also where quality varies most, because what goes inside the paper is invisible until you light it.
What is actually in a pre-roll
Legally, the label has to tell you the weight and the THC and CBD content. What it does not always tell you is whether the inside is whole flower or trim. Producers who use whole flower usually say so, in large letters, because it costs them more. If a pack is unusually cheap and silent on the point, that is your answer.
The formats
- Singles. Usually 0.5g or 1g. The right way to try a cultivar without committing to a jar.
- Multi-packs. Three, five or ten, often 0.35g each. Better value, and the easiest thing to bring to a group. See ordering for a group.
- Infused. Flower with concentrate added, either coated on the outside, mixed through, or both. Noticeably stronger. Start with half.
- Hash rolls. Flower with hash rolled in or a hash coil at the centre. A different flavour entirely, and worth trying if you like hash.
- Blunts and hemp wraps. Slower burn, heavier flavour from the wrap itself.
How to tell a good one before you light it
- Weight and firmness. It should feel evenly packed end to end, not loose at the tip and dense at the filter.
- The packaged-on date. Same rule as dried flower. Fresher burns better.
- The tip. A proper glass or spiral tip keeps the draw open. A rolled cardboard crutch is fine but collapses more easily.
- Smell. If you can smell it through the tube, that is usually a good sign.
Burning it properly
Toast the end evenly rather than flaming straight into it, and let it go out between draws rather than burning it down in one sitting. A pre-roll that runs down one side is almost always lit badly rather than rolled badly.
Storing a half
Put it back in the tube. A doob tube is airtight for a reason. Left in an ashtray overnight it will taste like an ashtray.
