Craft appears on a lot of packaging and means almost nothing on its own. It is not a protected term in Canada. What it can point to, when it is used honestly, is a set of production choices that genuinely change the result.
What producers usually mean by craft
- Micro cultivation. A licence class capped at a small canopy area. Smaller room, more attention per plant.
- Hand trimmed. Machine trimming is faster and knocks trichomes off. Hand trimming keeps the flower intact.
- Slow dry and long cure. Fast drying is cheaper and costs aroma. A long, cool dry and a proper cure is the single biggest quality difference in dried flower.
- Small batch. Fewer plants per run, so a batch can be judged on its own rather than blended into consistency.
- Living soil or organic inputs. A growing method rather than a guarantee, but usually a sign of someone paying attention.
None of these is verifiable from a package alone, which is why the licence holder name on the label is worth learning. See reading the label.
Where solventless comes in
Solventless means nothing but ice, water, heat and pressure. Hash, bubble hash and rosin. Because there is no solvent to purge, the final product keeps far more of the original aromatic profile.
- Rosin. Pressed from flower or hash. Hash rosin is the premium version.
- Live rosin. Made from fresh frozen material, so the aroma is closer to a living plant than a cured one.
- Solventless vapes. Rosin in a cartridge. More expensive than distillate, incomparably more flavour.
Why it costs more
Yield. Solventless extraction pulls far less product from the same input, and it only works with high quality starting material. You cannot make good rosin from bad flower, which is part of why it has become a marker of quality.
Is it worth it
If flavour is what you care about, yes. If you are buying on cost per gram, no. Most people who try live rosin once find it hard to go back to distillate, which is either a recommendation or a warning depending on your budget.
