Cannabis is at its best on the day it is packaged and declines from there. How fast it declines is almost entirely up to you.
The four enemies
- Light. UV degrades cannabinoids faster than anything else. Opaque or amber containers, in a cupboard.
- Air. Oxygen strips terpenes and dries buds out. Small airtight containers beat large half-empty ones.
- Heat. Anywhere above room temperature accelerates everything. Not on top of the fridge, not near a radiator.
- Humidity. Too dry and it crumbles and smokes harshly. Too damp and you risk mould.
The right humidity
Somewhere between 55 and 62 percent relative humidity is the accepted range for dried flower. Two-way humidity packs, the small sachets sold for exactly this, hold it there without you thinking about it. One pack per jar, replaced every couple of months.
Containers, ranked
- Glass with a gasket seal. The gold standard. Amber or in a dark cupboard.
- The original container. Legal packaging is designed for this and is better than most people assume. If you are finishing it within a few weeks, just use it.
- Metal tins. Fine, if they seal properly.
- Plastic bags. Static pulls trichomes off the flower and onto the bag. Avoid.
Do not put flower in the freezer
Frozen trichomes become brittle and break off the moment you handle the bud. Cold is good for concentrates and bad for flower. A cupboard at room temperature is genuinely the right answer.
Everything else
- Pre-rolls. Back in the tube, every time. See pre-rolls explained.
- Concentrates. Cold, dark, sealed. Rosin belongs in the fridge.
- Vape carts. Upright and at room temperature. Cold oil clogs.
- Edibles. Original packaging, away from food, out of reach of children and pets.
- Beverages. Cool and dark, and finish an opened bottle.
Buy little and often
