Every cannabis delivery in Ontario ends the same way: somebody 19 or older shows valid government-issued photo ID, and only then does the bag change hands. Here is what that means in practice, so nothing is a surprise at your door.
Who has to show ID
Whoever receives the order. Not whoever paid for it. If you order cannabis online and your roommate answers the door, your roommate needs their own valid ID showing they are 19 or older. If they cannot produce it, the order goes back to the store.
What counts as valid ID
It has to be issued by a government, it has to have your photo and date of birth, and it has to be unexpired. The usual ones:
- Ontario driver licence
- Ontario photo card
- Canadian passport
- Permanent resident card
- Canadian Armed Forces identification card
- Secure Certificate of Indian Status
A photo of your licence on your phone is not ID. A health card is not accepted as proof of age for cannabis. An expired passport is not valid, however recently it lapsed.
Why we cannot leave it at the door
Because the handover is the point at which age is verified, and there is no way to verify age through a closed door. It is the same reason a courier cannot leave wine in a lobby. We cannot leave a cannabis order with a concierge, in a mailroom, in a parcel locker, or with a neighbour, and we cannot hand it over to anyone who appears to be intoxicated.
If nobody is home
We bring it back to the shop and contact you to rebook. Nothing is lost, it just adds a trip. Two things that prevent it almost entirely: put your buzzer code or unit number in the order notes, and keep your phone near you once the order is confirmed.
The same rule applies in store
Bring ID to the counter at 811 Dundas St. W., Unit 2, every time, even if you were in yesterday and even if you are comfortably past nineteen. Our staff are required to check, and they will.
